It’s National Preparedness Month! Are you 2 Weeks Ready?
This is a great opportunity to raise awareness and make sure your family is prepared for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

In Oregon, experts recommend being 2 Weeks Ready, which means staying informed and aware of risks, having an emergency plan, and enough food, water, and supplies to survive for at least 2 weeks following any large-scale disaster. Go to medfordwater.org/2weeksready to learn more!

The forecast calls for hot temperatures this week before cooling down next week. If you are unsure whether your landscape needs water, try using a soil moisture meter to check to see if there is still water in the soil.

Use a timer or controller on your irrigation system to avoid overwatering. These can also be connected to a rain sensor to turn off when it rains; a smart controller can do this as well, using local weather to help moderate your watering schedule automatically.

Practice the “Cycle and Soak” method of watering for clay soils to help prevent runoff. Split your watering times in half and run your irrigation twice, separating the two sessions by at least an hour.

The soil becomes more permeable to water on the second watering session, which sends the water deeper instead of running off and being wasted.

Encourage deep watering by allowing water to penetrate 6-8" into the soil. To do this, use the "Cycle and Soak" watering method: Split your watering times in half and run your irrigation system twice, separating the two sessions by at least an hour.
The soil becomes more permeable to water on the second watering session, which sends the water deeper, and the plant's roots with it.
