As #FixALeak Week comes to a close, remember that you can still check for leaks all year long! When it’s time to start up your sprinkler system, check for broken sprinklers or nozzles spraying in the wrong direction, and check the zones and run times.
You may want to consult an irrigation professional or contact our Water Efficiency Team for a FREE sprinkler survey. Stay tuned for more tips before the watering season begins! #FixALeak
Another simple step you can take outside is to check your water meter. Turn off all water-using appliances/fixtures (including automatic ice makers) before leaving the house for an hour or two. Write down the numbers from your meter and do the same as soon as you return. If the numbers are different, you likely have a leak.
Bonus Tip: If your water meter has a red leak indicator dial, you can use it to check as well! If it is turning while all water is off, you likely have a leak. #FixALeak
Water meters are located in concrete boxes in the ground usually at the property line in front of or behind your home. It’s a good idea to locate yours and acquaint yourself with turning your water supply off/on before a water emergency occurs. medfordwater.org/yourmeter
Don`t forget garden hoses! If your garden hose leaks at its connection to the spigot while you run it, replace the nylon or rubber hose washer and ensure a tight connection to the spigot using pipe tape and a wrench. #FixALeak
Earlier this week we looked for leaky trouble inside your home; let`s move outside now! Look for drips and puddles under those hose bibs and any outdoor piping which could indicate a leak that might just need tightening at the joint. #FixALeak
Today our Water Efficiency Team is at Grover Electric and Plumbing Supply in Medford until 2 p.m., providing consumers with information about finding and fixing common leaks, as well as information about water efficient products. Come say hello! #FixALeak
If you end up needing to replace a fixture or appliance, EPA WaterSense makes it easy to select water–efficient products that can help your wallet AND the environment without noticing a difference in flow. Just look for products bearing the WaterSense label at your local retailer or go to bit.ly/3K6kLHy to search products online. 👀
When you go for a drink, check for drips at the sink! Many faucet leaks can also be easily fixed by tightening the fitting or replacing an inexpensive O-ring. Other tips: bit.ly/4hnZ6Io. #FixALeak
You can be a leak detective outside of the bathroom too! In the kitchen, check your faucet gaskets and washers. Pooling water underneath dishwashers and refrigerators with ice makers could indicate a supply line leak. #FixALeak
Start saving at the tap! Replace the old aerators in your bathroom faucets with WaterSense labeled models. For just a few dollars and a few minutes, you can save 700 gallons of water per year plus the energy to heat that water.

Yesterday, we checked toilets for #FixALeak Week, but there are other culprits in the bathroom that may have a leak! Dripping faucets and leaking showerheads can be easily fixed and help save water and money on your water bill. Get help at medfordwater.org/leaks or epa.gov/watersense.
Make sure to take advantage of our rebates! We offer a rebate program that will give you a credit of up to $85 per toilet when you purchase a low-flush model with the WaterSense label. We also have rebates for smart irrigation controllers and lawn replacement. medfordwater.org/rebates

Don’t flush money down the drain! If you do need to replace an entire toilet, look for the WaterSense logo. With WaterSense certified toilets, you’ll flush about 70% less water than one installed prior to 1994, and 20% less than the current standard 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. You might find that you’ll save even more since hidden leaks in old toilets are very common. bit.ly/3K6kLHy #FixALeak
